The genuineness of highly sensitive people and abstract artists

Real - An abstract artwork

Yes, as a highly sensitive person, I can attest that highly sensitive people are real. High sensitivity is not a hocus-pocus claim or a myth. Highly sensitive people have heightened sensitivity, awareness, and responsiveness to stimuli such as noises, lights, sounds, crowds, words, clothing, colors, art, emotions, and thoughts.

Evidence-based research suggests that high sensitivity may stem from a genetic adaptation and could provide an explanation for evolution in certain populations. Dr. Elaine Aron suggests that people globally have become more sensitive. She suggests that the trait can help protect oneself from a threat. This may seem counterintuitive; however, highly sensitive people are more aware of positive and negative stimuli, which makes them more attentive to details, making it easier for them to identify and overcome threatening situations.

When I speak about highly sensitive people, most often, people take a minute to analyse, if what I'm saying is real. When I corroborate my sharing with personal experiences and research findings, some people come around and begin to take the topic seriously.

It is true. 10% to 30% of the world's population is highly sensitive. I believe that the world is moving towards sensitivity and insensitivity. As more and more people become insensitive towards other humans, animals, plants, art, and science, there are also many more who are becoming sensitive towards humans, animals, plants, art, and science.

I have been blogging about highly sensitive people and the impact of abstract art for two and a half years. In my blog posts, I share stories about sensitivity surrounding emotions, thoughts, opinions, and abstract art for the most part.

A few years ago, I had no inclination towards art or abstract art. A tiny part of me found abstract artists to be 'not real' or not genuine.

I would think, ‘a banana taped to a canvas? That's art?’

I admit, my perception of abstract artists wasn't backed by personal experiences. However, now, it has changed. I have so much respect for abstract art, given that it helps me cope with my high sensitivity. Also, it is much fun to express oneself non-linearly!

I can't speak for all the abstract artists that exist, but I can say that abstract artists try to put up a genuine show of their art. What could look like a mere speck of color or random stroke could actually be the display of a genuine emotion by the abstract artist.

I have a theory that many highly sensitive people could be abstract artists, and many abstract artists could be highly sensitive people. The combination doesn't surprise me, as it is a compatible relationship. Abstract art helps in coping with high sensitivity, and high sensitivity helps in expressing oneself through abstract art.

The bottom line, my friend, is that if I had a microphone, I would dedicate a song to highly sensitive people and abstract artists across the globe. The song ‘You Make Me Feel Mighty Real’ by Sylvester would be my pick :D!

The chorus of the song goes like:

“You make me feel, mighty real

You make me feel, mighty real”

Enjoy!

Stay artistic and sensitive!
