Energetically sensitive?
Let’s start here, what does that even mean?
If you’re asking yourself this and you’re reading this blog, I want to say this upfront that
it isn’t a coincidence.
Sensitive individuals or individuals who are deeply aware of their surroundings can be energetically sensitive. This means they are aware of their own energy, other people’s energy, and often the energy of animals, plants, and spaces too.
From a coaching perspective, this level of energetic sensitivity is not extremely common.
And it’s not accidental either.
Energetic sensitivity is first and foremost a gift.
Energetically sensitive individuals tend to be highly perceptive. They often make decisions that bypass the logical mind and in the energy world, the logical mind can rarely explain our situations or solve our problems in the way we expect it to.
Instead, energetically sensitive individuals rely on intuition, feelings, and emotions.
They feel energy.
They understand energy.
They absorb energy.
And this is where things can become challenging.
The part most people don’t prepare you for is that once energetically sensitive individuals begin to sense energy, they begin to sense all types of energy.
Sharp energies
Soothing energies
Painful energies
Happy energies
Hurtful energies
In the energy world, there is no clear differentiation.
If we are surrounded by negative people, we may feel harsh energies on our skin or inside our bodies.
If we are surrounded by positive people, we may feel soothing and loving energies again, on our skin or inside our bodies.
Without support, this can lead to overwhelm, information overload, anxiety, confusion, and brain fog.
So the real question becomes:
How does one relieve oneself from harsh energies?
For me, the answer has been art specifically, abstract art.
I use it to relax, rewind, and give myself a break.
Over the past few days, for example, I’ve felt energetically bombarded by negative energies. It’s been harsh, with little breathing space or opportunity to disconnect. The result? Feeling drained, exhausted, and mentally clogged—classic signs of overwhelm in sensitive individuals.
Yesterday, I went into my room (my art studio) and began painting.
I began beating the paper with a brush and quickly realised something important. My
nervous system was overloaded with information.
As the energy moved onto the paper, my body responded. I was able to feel relieved, relaxed, and a breathing space opened up for my nervous system.
What three and a half years of art practice has taught me?
This has been my experience with art and abstract art in particular. And for the past three and a half years, art has helped me heal.
It has become a container for my challenging energetic experiences.
Yes, consistency matters. I’ve had to be regular with my art practice to see results. But I strongly believe painting is an activity that must be cultivated in sensitive individuals.
Why?
Because it is deeply underestimated as an energy protection tool.
Art is often marketed as a soothing activity and it absolutely is (so soothing!).
But art is also much more than that.
It is a tool that helps us conserve energy, regulate the nervous system, and protect our unique gifts, especially if we are energetically sensitive.
And that is where intentional guidance and coaching can make all the difference.
