Begin to release shame around sensitivity in five minutes by recognizing three benefits to painting

An abstract artwork
Sensitive painters and sensitive souls: Say hello to direction!

Often, sensitive souls can experience a range of emotions and varying degrees of sensitivity, and it is not something to be ashamed of, as one's sensitivity serves as their compass. Sometimes, it can be easy to express one's sensitivity; however, sometimes it may not be. I know it, as I identify as a highly sensitive person, and I have spent 31 years of my life being sensitive. I assure you, I understand that lack of expression can make sensitive people feel frustrated, as if they are holding on to a mountain within themselves.

Often, sensitive souls can feel ashamed of their emotions, thoughts, and energy. They might feel as though they are a burden to the world, as if they are different and don't belong to the world. I used to feel this way a few years ago, and I understand that a lack of understanding of one's sensitivity can make us feel ashamed of our sensitive and creative gifts.

Do you resonate with this problem?

But...what if sensitivity isn't a problem?

A few years ago, I found abstract art! I spent over three years working with abstract art, learnt about the research surrounding sensitivity and creativity, and began empowering myself through making abstract art. Here are my findings based on my research and experience:

Ease in expressing

I learnt to paint professionally and realized that I could express myself to a canvas. I believe that it is easy for sensitive and highly sensitive people to express themselves because they are in touch with their emotions. Their gifts of understanding their emotions and noticing them can help them put their emotions on paper/canvas more easily. In this way, sensitive souls can feel uninhibited to share, feel, and release their emotions without having to worry if the canvas would judge them.

Sensitive people have unique perspectives.

Sensitive people can view art in ways that bring up new perspectives. What could look like a dot to one person could look like a small universe to a sensitive person. What could look like a branch of a tree to one person could look like a ray of hope to a sensitive person.

This is not to say that people who aren't highly sensitive could not come up with unique perspectives. However, sensitive and highly sensitive people effortlessly form creative and unique perspectives about art. These unique perspectives can help in solving day-to-day challenges.

Sensitive people can create art that moves them and others.

Lastly, sensitive and highly sensitive people can create art that resonates with others emotionally. For example, in my research, I learnt that Monet could have been highly sensitive. When we look at painters like Monet, and if we notice his work, his art moves us. A few months ago, I went to Paris, and I had the chance to visit an art gallery with Monet's artwork. I was fascinated by his waterlily paintings. It was simple, yet it moved me emotionally. Similarly, highly sensitive people can make art that can signify a deeper meaning to them and others. I truly believe that our gifts to express our emotions or feel deeply help us create in a way that allows the viewers to connect with their emotions too.

Now, would you agree that sensitivity is a painter's gift and not a problem?

I recently created a video on YouTube sharing the benefits of being a sensitive abstract artist. It goes along the same line as the text here; however, if you are a visual person, you can learn through the YouTube video too!

Let's talk business

Now, many readers could be new to the term 'highly sensitive people'. Many might find it scary too, as the words highly and sensitive are close to each other. I wanted to assure you that there is nothing to be scared of.

Scientifically speaking, highly sensitive people are more aware of different stimuli like sounds, crowds, lights, emotions, energy, thoughts, words, and art. The higher levels of awareness make sensitive souls feel the intensity and effect of various stimuli.

For example, when I was a baby, I would cry if my mom made me wear clothes that made my skin itchy. A fabric that felt soft to my mom didn't feel soft to me. It wasn't that I was complaining as a baby; rather, I would feel hurt by the harshness of the fabric rubbing on my baby skin.

Similarly, every highly sensitive person could have different attributes. Some could dislike traffic or big cities; some could dislike cold climates or noisy classrooms.

I find painting to be the perfect solution for sensitive and highly sensitive people to feel relaxed and comforted. In fact, painting can also help highly sensitive people connect with their intuition, angels, and creative radar.

Sounds fantastic, doesn't it?

You might ask, 'do I need to know how to paint to enjoy the benefits of painting?'

To that, I would say, no! Absolutely not! You would not have to be an expert at painting to paint. Especially, if you're working with abstract art, you would only have to be willing to let go of your inhibitions to paint perfectly.

I deeply believe that sensitivity and abstract art have the potential to heal the unseen and help us express our repressed emotions. Imagine painting from a place of flow, trusting your intuition, and sharing your art as a sensitive soul.
